This site is run by Frank Christopher, a yacht broker working in South Florida. This page sets out what the site collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read rather than skimmed past.
If you never fill in a form, I do not know who you are. I do know that someone visited, which pages they looked at, and roughly what part of the world they were in. If you allow it, the visit is also recorded as an anonymous session I can play back.
If you do fill in a form, your details reach me by email and go into my contact records, and, if you allowed Marketing cookies, the pages you viewed before and after get attached to that record.
That is the whole thing. The rest is detail.
The contact form. Your name, email, phone number, the boat you are asking about, and your message. It arrives in my email and a copy is stored on the site.
The journal signup. Your first name, email, and which of a few options describes you. It is kept on the site and with my contact records, and used to send the journal.
The crew network form. Your name, email, mobile, role, where you are based, your licences and certifications, your experience and availability, the kind of work you want, the boat you are on, anything you write, and your CV if you attach one. It arrives in my email and a copy is kept on the site. The CV file is stored on the site’s server outside the public part of it, and only I can open it. When an owner, captain or management company I know is hiring, I may send them your CV and details to put you forward. I do not sell your details or give them to anyone else.
I ask for these because I need them to answer you. I do not ask for anything I do not need.
Microsoft Clarity. This is the one most people do not expect, so it goes first. Clarity records sessions on this site. That means mouse movement, scrolling, clicks and taps, page by page, which I can replay as a video of the visit. It also builds heatmaps showing where people click and how far they scroll. I use it to work out which parts of the site are confusing.
Nothing optional runs until you choose. When you first arrive, a notice asks. Clarity is listed as Analytics and HubSpot tracking as Marketing, and you can switch each one on or off under Customize. Choose Necessary only and neither loads. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, I treat that as Necessary only and do not ask. You can change your answer at any time from Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
Clarity does not record your name or identity. It masks the text typed into form fields by default, so what you type into the contact form should not appear in a recording. Microsoft processes this on their own systems under their own privacy terms. Recordings are deleted after 30 days and heatmap data after nine months, on Microsoft’s schedule rather than mine.
HubSpot. My contact records run on HubSpot, and its tracking code sets a cookie in your browser, but only if you allow Marketing cookies. While you are anonymous it simply counts a visitor. The moment you submit a form, HubSpot links that browser to your new contact record, including the pages you read before you got in touch. If you write to me about a 45 footer, I will often already be able to see that you read three engine room articles first.
Ordinary server records. Your IP address, browser type, and the pages requested, logged by the hosting in the normal way.
Google Search Console. Google reports aggregate search data to me. No individuals.
There is no Google Analytics on this site, and no advertising or social media pixels.
Clarity sets _clck and _clsk, and only after you accept. Your answer to the notice is remembered in your browser so it does not ask every visit. HubSpot sets hubspotutk and a small number of its own, also only after you allow them. WordPress may set a session cookie.
You can block or clear cookies in your browser at any time. The site works without them. Clarity and HubSpot will simply not know you have been here before.
Answer you. Send the journal if you asked for it. Follow up about a boat. Work out which pages are doing their job and which are not.
I do not sell your information. I do not rent it, trade it, or pass it to anyone for their own marketing. There is no advertising on this site and nobody is paying me for your data.
Only the companies that run the tools behind the site:
Each acts on my instructions. Beyond that, I would only hand anything over if the law required it.
Contact records stay until you ask me to remove them, or until it is clear there is nothing left to talk about. Clarity recordings are deleted after 30 days. Form submissions stored on the site are cleared periodically. Crew network details and CVs stay until you ask me to remove them.
Email me and ask for any of the following. You do not need to give a reason and I will not ask for one.
I will do it, and quickly. There is not much of it and I am one person.
Residents of Florida and of other states with privacy laws have these rights formally. I am extending them to everybody, because the alternative is keeping track of who is entitled to what, which is worse for everyone.
This site is not intended for anyone under 18, and I do not knowingly collect anything from them.
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If it changes in a way that matters, I will say so on the site.
